Is an uplifting and encouraging movie and an assertion that when God calls someone to do His bidding, men's opinions of that person are useless. it came out in the 60's and the acting is superb. She has acquired many adopted children and when war breaks out, with Japan invading China, she tries to take her children and many more to safety. At the point of leaving, the Mandarin asks for the records to be noted that he has become a Christian. A lovely feel good film. Old movie, old story but the love she displayed should long be remembered well into the future. She was turned down by the head of the China Missionary Society because, as he told her, she wasn't "qualified." It is a great film and for me one of Ingrid Bergman’s best performances. She was not discouraged and stood firm on her decision to go to China. Once in China, she becomes assistant to a long standing missionary in a far region of the country, until the day her mentor falls from a ladder and dies. I must have watched it dozens of times. Gladys Aylward was an absolutely marvellous women. This is an excellent true story of a woman that was told she was not qualified to be a missionary but went anyway because she knew God had qualified her. Still...I love this movie!! The true story of an English missionary (Ingrid Bergman) who led a hundred children over enemy territory in pre-WWII China. The acting, story line and characters are quite amazing & well developed. One of these items ships sooner than the other. The day came when she finally achieves her dream and embarks in the most difficult, yet rewarding of her life.
